Codman Academy’s philosophy is guided by the ten design principles and five core practices of EL Education:

What is Expeditionary Learning?

• Leadership and school improvement: Strengthening leadership across the school in instruction, culture and curriculum
• Culture and character: Building a school-wide culture of trust, respect, responsibility and joy in achievement
• Active pedagogy: Infusing dynamic instructional practices that build skills and critical thinking
• Learning expeditions: Addressing standards through project-based curriculum connecting to real-world needs.
• Structures: Creating time for student and adult learning, collaboration and focus on excellence.

Codman’s EL curriculum emphasizes project-based learning, expeditions, and investigations that link course work to real world experiences. Each Friday students engage in on or off site field work. Students in the 9th and 10th grade spend 2 full Fridays per month at the Huntington Theatre as part of the school’s Huntington Theatre Literacy Through Theatre partnership. All 11th and 12th grade students complete multi-week internships as part of the schools Codman Square Health Center Health Careers partnership. As a capstone project, seniors participate in an interdisciplinary social action project where the goal is to investigate a social justice issue and implement an action to address it.

As part of our partnership, Codman Academy teachers receive instructional coaching and professional development sessions from EL staff. Each year, Codman sends a delegation to the EL’s National Conference to present master classes and take part in professional development opportunities.
