The Huntington Theatre Company

Finding your voice is an important part of a Codman education. Every student graduates from Codman with extensive training in performance due to our long standing partnership with The Huntington Theatre Company. Watch this video​​​​​​​ to see our amazing partnership come to life.

Students in grades 9 and 10 are on site at the theatre every other Friday all year. All students compete in the national Poetry Outloud competition in grade 9 and the August Wilson monologue competition in grade 10. Additionally, both grades perform a year-end showcase production, staged at the Huntington and open to the public. Drawing on the four years of training in drama, each senior delivers a Senior Talk, which is a Socratic Apologia, or defense of his or her life. In 2012-2013, Tyrell Joseph ’14 won the state competition and represented Massachusetts in the national finals at the August Wilson Theater in New York City.

Each summer, 25 Codman students—and often some alumni—participate in theater production led by the Huntington’s Education Department Manager Meg O’Brien. Summer program participants are motivated to learn and explore in a theatre environment. This program leverages their enthusiasm, providing learning exercises and hands-on experience to help students understand and embody Shakespeare’s text.

Our partnership has been nationally recognized as an innovator in arts education. In 2009, the school received the Commonwealth Award from the Massachusetts Cultural Council for its partnership with the Huntington Theatre Company. This is the state’s highest award in arts and culture and Codman Academy is the first public school to receive this award. Graduation each year is held on one of the theatre’s main stages.
