At Codman Academy, we use curriculum that is standards-based, rigorous and inquiry focused, grounded in our identity as an EL Education school. Students learn through diving deeply into topics, learning embedded standards through an intentionally focused study. We prioritize teaching topics that are deeply rooted in social justice, encouraging our students to ask and answer critical questions impacting our world today. Our school culture is developed and sustained through practices that bring the community together, promote shared understandings, and encourage all members to become crew, not passengers.
Students learn through diving deeply into topics, learning embedded standards through an intentionally focused study. Students complete these studies through culminating projects or performance tasks, allowing for a way to share their learning in an authentic way.
Social justice is integral to every aspect of Codman Academy. Through the exposure to an expeditionary learning curriculum deeply rooted in social justice, Codman students demonstrate both an awareness of social justice issues and a commitment to give back to the community.
The crew system is employed in both the Upper School and the Middle School. Crews meet four times a week for 30 minutes. During Crew, students develop relationships, dedicate time to service, and engage in conversations and check-ins related to academic progress and other school related issues.
Each Thursday, the entire Upper School meets for Community Circle (CC), a 60 minute student-run show featuring informational skits, awards, student presentations, and guest speakers. Students in the school’s Community Circle Club meet weekly to create activities and write scripts for student anchors.
