Wellness at Codman Academy

Athletics and Wellness are an integral part of Codman Academy’s  holistic educational program. All students participate in the Wellness program through classes, membership on an athletic team, or completing Wellness independent study credit elsewhere. Classes and athletic practices meet in the early morning and/or late afternoon. Classes and sports change with the trimester and/or season and are graded according to the Wellness / Saturday Class Rubric. In 2010, Codman Academy’s Wellness program received the Gold-Level Massachusetts School Wellness Award in recognition of the school’s investment in the areas of health and wellness.

Wellness Health & Fitness Goals:

  1. To inspire the growth of health in our students.
  2. To help students maintain positive relationships.
  3. To establish the foundation for students to create a healthy lifestyle for themselves and their families.
  4. To improve physical conditioning as a requisite for good health.
  5. Develop self-esteem.

Upper School Wellness takes place in a variety of different locations around our Codman Square community.  All Codman students must participate in Wellness classes (similar to physical education) before or after school for each of the three trimesters. Options include participation on one of Codman’s varsity athletic teams or participation in classes taught by local organizations and community members. Wellness class offerings vary each semester. Additionally, the Codman Academy Wellness program has a partnership with the Dorchester YMCA that offers free student memberships.

Wellness class offerings include:

  • Athletic Teams
  • Personal Fitness*
  • YMCA Fitness Classes
  • Strength and Conditioning
  • Cardiovascular Training
  • Swimming Instruction (9th grade requirement)

*Offered to upperclassman students as an independent study option: Participation at the Dorchester YMCA where students must complete a fitness assessment test to earn credit.

Middle School Wellness takes place at the Dorchester YMCA.  7th and 8th grade students attend the YMCA in the morning for a variety of fitness classes before coming back to Codman for the start of class (Monday-Thursday). Wellness Director and YMCA instructors teach physical education courses following a variety of learning targets focused on various sports, cooperative games, fun activities and general fitness.

Lower School Wellness takes place on site at the lower school campus. Lower School students will have recess, gym time, or park play time daily as well as Movement classes. Lower School students present their learned skills from movement class throughout the year.
