Codman Academy was the first high school in the country to be co-located in a community health center. Our partnership with the Codman Square Health Center, which dates from the school’s establishment, allows both organizations to work together to improve the health and well being of the community. The underlying idea behind our partnership is that prevention is the best medicine, and that education is the best means of prevention.
Our groundbreaking partnership with the Codman Square Health Center continues to provide unique opportunities and services for our students. Our full-time Partnership Director oversees collaborative efforts between the school and health center, including free dental, hearing, and vision screenings for K1-8 students and dental hygiene education sessions. The partnership also piloted a Sex Education program for our students, employing the help of the Family Medicine Department at the health center, ABCD (Action for Boston Community Development), and the Planned Parenthood League of Massachusetts to teach sex education to our Middle and Upper School students. Codman students have access to free resources and services from the Family Medicine Department at the health center and a Family Planning Counselor holds weekly confidential office hours, open to all Upper School students with questions or concerns. Additionally, many Upper School students complete internships at the Health Center during the summer, sparking interest in the public health career field.
The Codman Square Health Center opened in 1979. Today more than 250 employees record over 120,000 client contacts annually. The Codman Square Health Center has become an innovative leader in regional, national and international efforts to improve community health.
