Standards-Based Grading at Codman

Codman Academy now uses PowerSchool for student grades. To access your child’s grades, attendance, and teacher comments, we encourage you to create an account for our new system. New families will need to create an account. Going forward, the parent portal will be your one stop account for viewing and managing your children’s information.

As you look at your child’s report, you will notice that Codman’s grading system is a little different than the traditional A, B, C, D, or F letter grades. We use a system called Standards-Based Grading.

Standards-Based Grading gives teachers, students and families a better picture of student understanding. To begin, we divide up standards into specific learning targets. Then we assess students on those learning targets. By pinpointing understanding on each learning target, we can figure out what each student still needs to work on. When we calculate course grades, we place much more emphasis on a student’s most recent assessments. We want to know what the students know right now, not a month ago.

Below is a chart with our grading system and levels, as you will see on the progress report:

Your child’s progress report is divided by courses. Your child’s course grade (e.g. 2.5) appears right next to the course name. This is their Overall Academic Mastery. We expect that all students will meet course standards (Level 3 or above) by the end of the year. If your child is not yet at a Level 3, don’t worry. Standards-based grading is all about feedback to improve student learning. Students, families, and teachers can look at exactly which Learning Targets the student has not demonstrated understanding of, and follow up to make sure the student gets extra help with that specific topic.

Thank you for giving your child positive feedback and encouragement so that they will work hard to improve their understanding. We look forward to your partnership in supporting your child’s learning and growth. If you have any questions please contact your child’s teachers and/or crew leader.
