Dramatic Inspiration

Admission to Codman is by lottery. Every student receives extensive theatre training. Shown here: Donna Glick, Education Director, The Huntington Theatre confers with a Codman student selected to deliver Lincoln's Gettysburg address in the Massachusetts House Chambers on February 11, 2009. Please click here to read the Boston Globe article.

Codman recently was awarded The Commonwealth Award, the state's highest award in the arts and culture, for our robust partnership with The Huntington Theatre Company. Building on their work in grades 9 and 10, students in grade 11 write and produce an original hip hop opera based on U.S. history working with Boston Modern Orchestra Project (BMOP). As a capstone graduation requirement, over the course of the year, each senior writes and delivers a senior talk to deliver to the entire school. The senior talk is based on a Socratic apologea, or defense of one's life. In this way, finding and claiming one's own voice is taught sequentially at Codman for every student.
