Codman Academy Charter Public School enrolls a small number of high-school students (about 120) from an urban neighborhood in Boston MA. Admission to the school is by lottery. Of the student body, 98% are students of color; 17% require special education accommodations; 4% are English Language Learners; 75% are eligible for free or reduced lunch. This site offers a collection of curricular materials and teaching strategies that we have found to work well with our students, who do not always respond well to methods that succeed in other learning environments. Many of the curriculum ideas are presented as "learning expeditions," a form of long-term, in-depth, authentic project described in detail by Expeditionary Learning/Outward Bound. We currently offer best practice curriculum in humanities, mathematics, physics, chemistry, and multi-topic all-school activities, as listed in the menu at left. We hope you will find here some ideas and resources that you can use in your school, especially in teaching those whose educational backgrounds and learning styles are similar to our students'. We are always looking for better ways to learn and teach, and encourage you to contact us with feedback or ideas from your own teaching experience. We also invite your public comments below and on the main page of each best practice.
